This piece highlights the era of the transatlantic slave trade but also encapsulates the Black feminine in two opposing ways: the royal and the subjugated. In this piece, I wanted to deconstruct the presuppositions of class structure by emphasizing that both women are equally beautiful and are obliged to receive respect.
Also, this piece is loosely inspired by Queen Nzinga of Angola who offered sanctuary to runaway slaves and others affected by the slave trade. In the end, this piece showcases Black women acknowledging their own value and beauty through seeing the light in one another that the rest of the world often dismisses.
