Art Exhibition Featuring Black Comic Artists, Toy Makers, & Illustrators by The Collective Opens January 18

Memphis, TN, Release: January 15, 2020. For Immediate Release.

A new exhibition, The Audacity: Addressing Our Representation in Popular Culture, by The CLTV (Collective) and Guest Curator, Grae Williams, opens January 18, 2020, at The CMPLX (Complex), 2234 Lamar Ave, Memphis, TN. The exhibition features 12 artists and will be on display until March 21, 2020.

Artists in the exhibition include Parker-Nia Gordon, Toonky Berry, Mia Saine, Kenneth Alexander, Quinn McGowan, Dezmond Gipson, Sarai, David Yancy III, Amber Williams, Grant Butler, Therrious Davis, and Guest Curator, Grae Williams.

The CLTV and Guest Curator, Grae Williams, invites gallery guests to enter an exhibit full of original fictional worlds, stories, and characters created by Black illustrators, comic and manga artists, and toymakers. These creators and storytellers use their imaginations and art to shape not only how they see themselves, but how the world does, too.

By day, Williams is the Creative Manager at the National Civil Rights Museum. By night, he is Founder of Mayke Entertainment LLC (pronounced “make”), an entertainment studio creating an original superhero comic book universe. The universe features superheroes that are Black, Brown, People of Color, Women of Color, LGBT+, and Persons with Disabilities.

“The Audacity brings Memphis’ own comic and manga artists, toymakers, and illustrators together in one show. The pieces authentically represent our stories, culture, and voices in original, imaginative works, and underline the importance of having control of our own narratives,” says Williams.

“The Audacity” will surprise gallery guests with original characters from fantasy, superhero and manga worlds, explore cultural narratives and images through illustration, and expand on the popular hashtag: #RepresentationMatters.

The CLTV and the artists of “Audacity” invite gallery guests to come as their favorite character from a comic, anime, cartoon, video game, TV, or film in your best cosplay or t-shirt.
